Retinal Services

The retina lines the posterior two-thirds of the inside of the eye globe. It may be likened to the film of a camera. It receives light, which induces an electrochemical reaction transmitted along the optic nerve to the occipital cortex of the brain, where it is decoded and an image is formed.

In addition to problems inherently retinal, such as retinal detachment, vitreoretinal disorders, retinal degenerations (macular degenerations, retinitis pigmentosa), trauma and tumors, the retina may be affected by a multitude of systemic conditions, the common ones including diabetes, hypertension, anemia, metastatic cancers, leukemia, and atherosclerosis. To varying degrees, all retinal problems are manifested by visual impairment. Diabetes in those under 55, and macular degeneration in those over 55, are the leading causes of blindness in America.

Dr. Ward is a retina specialist who completed specialty training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He and his specialized staff are committed to provide advanced diagnostic and therapeutic care of patients with retinal diseases. When indicated, ancillary tests including fundus photography, fluorescein digital angiography and indocyanine green angiography, B-scan ultrasonography, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) are performed. Laser procedures are performed in the office.
