What are the differences in intraocular lenses (IOLs)?

Recent advances in cataract surgery mean you now have several options for cataract treatment. In any case, the cloudy lens must be replaced by a synthetic one. We will work with you to select the most appropriate type of intraocular lens (IOL) for your vision and lifestyle needs. Your options include:

Intraocular Lens Implant Examples

  • Monofocal Lenses: correct vision very well, but at one distance. As a result, after surgery, you’ll likely need to continue wearing glasses for either near or distance vision, and sometimes for both.
  • Multifocal Lenses: provide distance and near vision, decreasing your dependence on glasses.
  • Toric Lenses: designed for people with astigmatism, these lenses greatly decrease the need for distance glasses after surgery.

Astigmatism and Cataracts

What is astigmatism?

Astigmatism Correction Diagram

Astigmatism is a common vision problem, usually caused by a cornea that is not perfectly round. (The cornea is the clear front surface of the eye.) As a result, light rays are not focused on one spot.

How is astigmatism treated?

If you have astigmatism, several options are available to correct the condition, including glasses and contact lenses. For cataract patients with astigmatism, a toric IOL is an excellent treatment option.

Am I a candidate for a multifocal or toric IOL?

During your cataract evaluation, your doctor will talk with you about your vision needs and what type of IOL is best for you. People with other eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy or macular degenerations may not be good candidates for multifocal lenses.
