Understanding coverage for eye exams can be confusing and frustrating for patients. Below, we have detailed the difference between the two types of evaluations.
A routine eye exam (also known as a vision exam) includes a comprehensive eye exam and refraction to evaluate a patient’s vision and provide a prescription for glasses if necessary. However, a routine exam is not suitable for patients with medical eye conditions that require treatment and potential testing.
The following eye conditions are considered routine, as outlined by insurance coverage:
Any conditions discovered during a routine eye exam that result in a diagnosis that requires
discussion and/or treatment at the time of the visit will result in billing the patient’s medical
benefit. Vision plans like VSP and Eyemed specify that medical eye exams must be billed to the patient’s medical insurance.
Some vision plans will cover evaluations for diabetes without complications.
While a Medical Eye Exam may appear similar to a Routine Eye Exam, it requires greater
expertise in diagnosis, discussion, and treatment.
A medical exam includes diagnosis and treatment of an eye condition, which include but
are not limited to those listed below:
Most patients over age 50 and nearly all over 65 have at least one medical eye condition
that requires continued care from an eye specialist. With few exceptions, the prevalence of
medical eye problems increases as patients age
Before check-in, our staff does their best to identify each patient’s insurance coverage.
However, the patient is responsible for providing accurate and updated insurance
information.
At check-in, we ask patients to identify the reason for their visit that day. If a patient states
that the reason for their visit is for a Routine Eye Exam, they will be required to acknowledge
the following:
Questions?
If you have any questions, please call our billing department at (860) 674-7600 before your
appointment.
You should plan to spend from one to two hours in the office, depending on what you are being seen for and if testing is required. This will allow our skilled technicians and doctors the time they need to do a thorough examination. Additional time may be required depending on your specific situation.
For your convenience, we schedule appointments for our patients. Although we do our best to stay on schedule, there are times when circumstances outside of our control occur. When emergencies arise, we do our best to see those patients in addition to our regularly scheduled patients. We will do our best to inform you of any delays and appreciate your understanding and your patience. We will strive to see you in a timely manner and provide you with the highest quality care.
During your visit, your doctor may determine that additional testing or services are needed. We may be able to perform those tests or services at that time or it may be better to reschedule for a later visit. Should you have any questions or suggestions regarding our services, please speak with any of our staff.
It may be necessary to dilate your eyes during your visit. Dilation results in light sensitivity and blurred near vision, which gradually improves over several hours. You might find your vision after dilation to be more comfortable if you bring sunglasses to wear after your visit. However, we can provide you with disposable sunglasses. Most people feel comfortable driving after dilation, but if you are unsure, please be safe and bring a driver with you.

If you choose to be reminded by phone, please listen to the complete message and make your choice to confirm or to cancel your appointment before hanging up. If you are unavailable when the call is made, a message will be left for you. Our office staff is available to speak with you Monday through Friday 8 am to 5:00 pm at 860-678-0202.
